While browsing the list of most frequently visited websites, I couldn’t help but notice that only one of the sites in the top 100 was based in Canada.

You may be asking: What could this site possibly be? Google.ca? Myspace.ca? Ebay.ca?

No, don’t be so banal. The only Canadian site on the list is unique in more than one way. It also happens (apparently) to be the most popular pornography resource in the world.

The true north strong and free, indeed.

Clive Thompson on Why Science Will Triumph Only When Theory Becomes Law

Really, science will never triumph. I caught an episode of Nova on Tuesday about Intelligent Design, and while delivering the argument to the layperson audience, the show actually suggested that genetic mutation was, fully, the primary mechanism behind evolution. Forget genetic recombination and selection pressures– it apparently comes entirely from mutations. This kind of dismissive simplification accounts for the thousands of North Americans who think there’s a possibility that they may, at some point in their life, undergo some “genetic mutation” and become an X-man.

The function of primary, secondary, and, increasingly, even higher education has become to teach people how properly to express themselves. Academic standards have been decimated in favor of what can only be described as soggy self-efficacy workshops. Students just dredge through years of compulsory attendance, which they tolerate only for the social aspect, and very few of them are exposed to genuine academics, or anything that even fosters the motivation to learn. For this reason, millions successfully ooze through the system and emerge not only in complete ignorance of concepts like evolution, but fully unequipped to even process them. When these blobs become adults and wield power on school boards, they try to introduce “alternative theories”, which essentially just means garbage that’s slightly less boring and confusing to them.

The bottom line is: fiddle with the jargon all you want- people still aren’t going to give a shit.
